This week I watched Season 1 of "Ally McBeal," and, in part, I'm glad I did. I had forgotten just how cooky Calista Flockhart is in the show, but I also forgot how much I relate to her character, Ally.

Flockhart plays the title character, who is anything but graceful and poised. This role had to be non-stop fun for the Flockhart as she rarely made it through a complete episode on her feet. Her character was just normal enough to be believable, and just crazy enough to be lovable. Ally spends most of Season 1 trying to get over her ex-boyfriend, Billy, played by Gil Bellows. Billy was the love of her life who left her to go to law school. Since then Ally became a lawyer and, as luck would have it, winds up working at the same firm Billy and his new wife Georgia (brilliantly played by Courtney Thorne-Smith). The owners of the firm, Richard Fish and John Cage, are who really make the show. Greg Germann and Peter MacNicol play these roles respectively, and the character nuances they bring to the screen are never-ending. I love watching them work, and I love watching the cast together. They are truly a team, and it is easy to see that each member of the cast trusts the others completely, enough to let them take their characters and each scene as far as it can go. We see the human side of each character throughout the season, endearing some of them more to the audience than even Ally.

While the show is set in a lawyer's office, it does anything but tackle big political issues. This firm takes simple cases that most would assume are easy losses, and they win. We see the way the law is twisted to fit each individual, and the arguments given to support their ridiculous cases actually make you think. A woman sues her boss for sexual harrassment because he didn't ask her to sleep with him after asking all the other women in the office; a man is sued for breaking into his girlfriend's house and fondeling her toes, but the lawyer's chalk it up to his zealous love her her and actually win; and a woman sues her ex-fiance for leaving her at the altar, and he is brought before the judge for questionning. They really make you think, but in a quirky enough way to keep you interested.

I highly recommend giving this series a chance. If you need to get used to it, try just the first season.
I am a huge fan of games where you start from scratch and build: whether it be a city, a house, a mall, a farm, a train station... you get the idea. When I first started play "Farm Town" on Facebook I thoroughly enjoyed planting, harvesting, and selling my crops. However, that's where the fun ended. There was no point or purpose; I just kept doing more of the same thing over and over. Luckily, "Ranch Rush" takes care of that problem.

The goal in "Ranch Rush" is to complete a customer order each day. You are given a specific time frame to complete this order, and it may involve anything from harvesting wheat to making bread to taking honey out of a bee hive. Each day gets a little harder, and each week in the game you add more products to offer to customers. The game is very fast-paced, but luckily begins with a slower tutorial and helpful hints that pop up until you get the hang of everything. I love that I control how much to plant, how many animals to have on my ranch, and what machines to buy in order to fill orders. There are obstacles, of course, such as bugs in the crops, broken machines, and bee stings. These only add to the challenge of the game, making it much more entertaining.

"Ranch Rush" is available for individual download, or as a pack from Amazon.com. I highly suggest giving it a try, but not in a time frame where you need to get something else accomplished! The Directorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09243428321593635096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552022897180337293.post-62209963173931352282010-06-22T13:12:00.001-05:002010-06-28T15:46:01.513-05:00Yakov's Moscow Circus Lacks Spectacle

While the animal tricks were intriguing to watch, the rest of the acts at Yakov's "Moscow Circus" left me unimpressed, to say the least...

While the show is primarily geared towards children, the performances in the show left most of the kids in the audience bored and wanting more. The circus was rolled out as a story, with Yakov reading from a storybook as the pre-recorded narrator on the multi-media screens on either side of the stage. The story itself didn't hold my interest at all, and some of the ties to the performers were pretty far fetched. I would much rather have seen just the acts go one to another without some cheesy narrative about how Ivan the unicyclist needs to jump through the flaming hoops of despair to reach his one true love, Yvonne the circus ballerina. It was too overdone and lacked entertainment value.

That being said, the two sets of animal acts were worth the wait. The circus bears were outstanding and incredibly human-like. Most walked on their back legs the entire act, and did everything from ride a bike to a full dance number. The dog tricks were equally entertaining, and this act showed off a few tricks I have never seen in a dog circus act before. Unfortunately they dressed the dogs like lions, which covered their entire heads in a plastic mask, and I felt so sorry for the dogs that I had trouble enjoying all their antics.

"Moscow Circus" comes complete with aerials, fire breathers, and a pretty entertaining opening act from a single clown. The audience was asked to participate several times, including playing audience volleyball, throwing frisbees for the clown to catch around his head, and a few surprise tricks for the kids. While your children may be mildly entertained, there are definitely cheaper ways to entertain your family than the $35 adult ticket and $15 child ticket. The performance does come with a Russian dinner, but, again, better food for less money isn't hard to find in Branson. The show runs every Tuesday - Saturday through August with 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows. You can purchase tickets here, or by calling the Yakov theater at 800-728-4546.
By no means are these songs actually her greatest hits: this is by far more of a showcase of a few mega-hits along with her post-cancer power songs. But to include the song "Lucky" from her album of the same name is absurd: that album was her lowest selling album to date. And while I do appreciate an artist releasing new material on a greatest hits album, I AM BUYING IT FOR THE GREATEST HITS! Just being honest...

The opening track is a wonderful cover of "Refugee" by Tom Petty, and Etheridge's raspy voice is a perfect fit for the rock song. We are then ushered back to the beginning with a few early tracks from Melissa's first album. I have heard her perform "Like The Way I Do" many times, but still, listening to the original version and it's haunting sound is the best way to go. One thing I've always admired about Melissa is that her songs are real, from the gut. I have no doubt that these songs were written out of personal experience, which makes songs like "You Can Sleep While I Drive" all the more beautiful and sad at the same time.

Although, in Melissa's own words, this is the most misunderstood song she has written and is not actually a love song at all, the tune is still as catch as ever. The 90s were Melissa's best-selling decade, so I was shocked to find that there were only three songs from that entire decade on the album. The last half is filled with tracks from her albums Breakdown and Lucky, then four unreleased tracks finish up the set. It made me sad that several of my favorite Etheridge rock songs were nowhere to be found; including a few released just two years before her this album. The unreleased tracks are powerful, including her breast cancer survivor anthem "I Run For Life," which I immediately uploaded to my computer and intend to play at every Relay For Life my DJ company is involved in. But it doesn't change the fact that there are several key songs missing from this release.

All in all this is a great taste of Melissa over the years, and I highly suggest picking up a copy. Then I more highly suggest going back and finding copies of her albums to find the favorites that weren't included, but that you will love and be singing in the car for years to come.
It was the day my music died.

Say what you will about Michael Jackson; his quirks, his looks, his financial status. But let's be honest; the man was an amazing entertainer and the undisputed King of Pop. Michael Jackson completely transformed the music world, from bridging the gap between racism in music, to showing the world how a music video should be done. There are few arenas of music that this man didn't touch during his lifetime, and I, for one, am still recovering from the shock and sadness of his passing.

I have been in the mobile DJ business for just over nine years, and I can literally count on two hands the number of events I have played music at that didn't have a Michael Jackson song in the lineup. No matter what type of gathering I was at, his music transcended age, gender, and race.

It always amazes me to see how many junior high and high school age kids can sing along to every word of "Beat It;" how many wedding parties learn the entire "Thriller" dance and show it off during their wedding reception; and regardless of what they are doing, how many people stop and begin to cheer and attempt their version of the moonwalk when the opening beats of "Billie Jean" are heard through the sound system. The man was a legend, and lucky for us his music will always live on. My favorite MJ song? "Wanna Be Startin' Something." I will never hear it the same way again.

I ran into an older acquaintance of mine the day after Jackson died, and this gentleman said a few things that stuck with me. "This is your generation's Elvis," he told me. "You will never forget where you were when you heard the news. I can still remember exactly where I was when Elvis died. There are only a few moments like that in your lifetime." And he is exactly right. I will never forget my drive home from work that day as I listened to the news. At first, like many others, I thought it was some kind of joke or prank, but once I realized how true the story was, I couldn't get my brain to believe it. With an amazing world tour on the horizon, a tour that could have easily rebooted his career and reminded the world exactly why he was a megastar, Michael Jackson died of cardic arrest. Unbelieveable.

My generation has truly lost its King. It is a moment I will never forget. The Directorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09243428321593635096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552022897180337293.post-13670858937365046112010-06-03T11:38:00.003-05:002010-06-09T10:21:28.128-05:00Feeling Desperate for Some "Desperate Housewives"

I, like many others, have begun the trek of watching my favorite TV series on DVD. The benefits are massive - no commercials, I can watch it anytime I want, no commercials, the special features are usually entertaining, and, of course, there are NO COMMERCIALS! This trek has led me to discover a series I was unsure of at first, but have now grown to love: Desperate Housewives.

While Season 1 of any show is normally a "growing and discovering" year, the show picked up its rhythm early on and threw out powerful and gripping storylines from day one. Seasons 2 and 3 introduced new characters, mysteries, and a few key plot points, but Season 4 is the real show-changer.
Susan, played by Teri Hatcher, is the adorable clutz with the "girl-next-door" appeal. Felicity Huffman plays Lynette, the over-worked mother that most women can completely relate to. Gabrielle, the resident former-supermodel-turned-suburban housewife, is beautifully played by Eva Longoria Parker. And the true Stepford Wife of the group, Bree Hodge, is brought to life by Marcia Cross. These women feel like our neighbors and, in some cases, our friends. We have seen them love, lose, learn, and continue to live no matter what they face personally or as a group. Season 4 really seems to highlight the best in each woman as they go through new difficulties on every level. Susan and her new husband Mike (James Denton, who doesn't have his shirt off nearly enough in this season...) find out they are pregnant, deal with Mike's drug addiction, send Susan's daughter Julie off to college, and calculate the risks of being "older parents"; Lynette battles cancer, a former employee comes back to threaten Lynette and Tom (played by the always sexy Doug Savant), and Tom and the kids are nearly killed after a tornado rips through Wisteria Lane; Bree continues to fake a pregnancy so she can keep her daughter Danielle (Joy Lauren) from suffering public humiliation, her husband Orson (the impeccable Kyle McLaughlin) comes clean about a past crime, causing Bree to force a separation, and Bree learns a hard lesson of friendship with a new neighbor; Gaby begins an affair with her former husband Carlos (Ricardo Chavira) after several attempts to end her marriage with Victor (played by the amazing John Slattery), her husband is killed, she and Carlos are remarried after an accident in the tornado makes him permanently blind, and the two accidentally house a drug dealer (Justine Bateman). A new couple moves in down the street, opening the eyes of the women to gay life. But the true heart of the season unfolds as the women of Wisteria Lane are forced to accept a new neighbor into their midst. Dana Delany joins the cast as the jaded former resident of Wisteria Lane Katherine Mayfair. While Katherine did used to live in Mike's old house, which she has repurchased, she brings with her a whole new set of problems and demons. As the season unfolds we learn of Katherine's ex-husband, played by the semi-creepy Gary Cole, who is out on a mission to find Katherine and her daughter, and serve his own brand of justice. There are many secrets that Katherine is keeping; the truth about her ex-husband, whether the girl we see is truly her daughter, and what really happened in Chicago with her current husband Adam (a surprising role for Nathan Fillion) and his medical practice. Katherine befriends the girls, slowly but surely, as different events force them together. She makes a special connection with Bree, and the two discover how alike they really are. Which brings it all down to the finale...

After a tension-filled episode full of answers to Katherine's mysteries the women are thrown together by one vengeful act; Katherine kills her ex-husband and the women cover for her to the police. An instant and unbreakable bond is formed between them, and Katherine, unlike any of the other neighbors, is brought into the fold and now considered one of the group.

The show then takes an unusual turn: it jumps ahead five years. In less than two minutes we are brought up to speed on where the women are now - the kids are more grown up, marriages have been reconciled, couples who swore they would never have kids now have several, and others have ended their marriages and move on. It is a well-calculated move by creator Marc Cherry; after all, we've seen four seasons of the women in their current situations. Bumping the time frame up five years puts them all in a new and exciting period of life, and gives Cherry the opportunity to fill us in on what has happened in those five years and how the women's decisions affect where they are at now. On a casting note it is also a way to introduce new characters who have steady relationships with the women, as well as replace actors playing children with actors playing teenagers. All in all I think it was a brilliant move, and it really changed the course of the show.

So what happens next? As soon as Netflix sends me Season 5 you'll be the first to know...
I have always enjoyed the adventures he finds himself in, the exotic locations he travels to, and how simply cool the man is. I thought I would delve a little farther into the character and find out who he truly was - or, at least, who he was created to be. This idea came to me while standing in the middle of The Library Center in Springfield, MO, so I immediately ran to the Fiction section and looked for books by Ian Fleming, the creator of the character. And there it was: Casino Royale. The very first James Bond novel; the one that changed the world forever. I had heard that Fleming had been in British intelligence or the army or something, so I wanted to see how he truly created the character before Bond was commercialized and made a star. And I must say, to date, that the books have been amazing and an incredible adventure to read. So let's compare the first book with one of the last movies of the same name, and we'll see which one ends up holding all the cards.

The first James Bond book is set in the early 1960s after Bond has finished fighting with the army in the Cold War and has settled into his new routine as a spy for British Intelligence. We learn in the second chapter that he has already been given "Double 0" status, and that he has had to kill two men in order to achieve that title. The movie Casino Royale, which stars newcomer to the franchise Daniel Craig, takes the liberty of showing us those two kills in the opening sequence. I was happy to see that, as it drove home the point that Bond could kill and not think twice about it. Bond is then given his first "Double 0" mission; defeat Le Chiffre, the treasurer of a Soviet-backed trade union in France, at baccarat. The Secret Service hopes this will bankrupt Le Chiffre, causing Soviet espionage agency SMERSH to kill him. Little does MI6 know that this interaction with SMERSH will be the first of many... In the movie, Bond is sent to enter a poker tournament that Le Chiffre is hosting in the exquisite Casino Royale, and the expert gambler accepts. I enjoyed reading about baccarat in the novel, and for those, like me, who had no idea how to play the game, a brief tutorial was included by Fleming. The movie opted for the most popular gambling game in the world: Texas Hold' Em.

Along the way Bond is introduced to Vesper Lynd, a beautiful but emotionally unavailable woman assigned to help him. Played by Eva Green in the film, Vesper is written as a hard-headed tease, and Bond falls head over heels for her in both book and film. Together they uncover several layers to Le Chiffre's money problems, but when Bond ends up broke at the baccarat table it is CIA agent Felix Leiter who steps in with enough American money to save the day. Bond reenters the game, wins it all, and sends Le Chiffre on the run. Or so he thinks... The poker tournament portrayed in the movie is fascinating to watch. What could easily bore the audience is made into a kind of action sequence; you are captivated by the two men and their showdown of cards and chips. The game of Texas Hold 'Em is explained in the movie just as baccarat is in the novel, so even a complete stranger can easily follow along. Jeffrey Wright plays Leiter in the film; an interesting choice for a character who makes an appearance in over half of the 22 Bond movies. Wright's Leiter is quiet, but forceful. Not the bumbling, resourceful hick he was made out to be in the preceding Bond films.

Bond's adventures with Le Chiffre take a new twist when he kidnaps Vesper and uses her as bait. After an extreme amount of torture, which the book hints at subtly and the movie portrays vividly, an unknown assassin burts in, killing Le Chiffre but leaving Vesper and Bond alive. Bond is sent to a hospital to recover for over three weeks, where he and Vesper fall in love and commit to one another. I love this part of the movie, as it opens Bond up to see a completely human and vulnerable person. Bond vows to quit the Secret Service only to learn that Vesper is not who she seems to be. From this point the book and the film take completely different paths. The book shows us the fearful side of Vesper who is constantly looking over her shoulder at a man with an eye patch who appears to be following them. She is convinced he is after her, and after she commits suicide by pill swallowing Bond learns that she was a double agent for the Soviet Union who was sent to make sure Bond did not escape Le Chiffre. In the film, however, Vesper is still followed by a man with an eye patch, but she meets up with him to pay him off. Bond learns later that she was paying him for the life of her boyfriend who was captured and being held prisoner. After an enormous fight scene in a flooded building, Bond tries to rescue Vesper, but she pulls back, drowning herself. Both endings have Vesper saving Bond's life while hiding a terrible secret, and both end with Bond's famous words to M, the head of MI6: "The bitch is dead."

An amazing story, plenty of action, a gorgeous leading man, and an amazing spy story: Casino Royale, either version, has it all. Overall I think the movie wins out here. It really gives us a better outlook on who Bond was before he was given a "license to kill," and before his emotions were shut down completely. I highly suggest reading the novel, and if you haven't seen the movie you are missing out!

Catch Steve Carell and Tina Fey in roles you've seen them in at least 100 times... but it still adds up to a great night of comedy and an excuse for a Date Night!

Carell and Fey play Phil and Claire Foster, a very normal, very boring couple who live just outside New York City. Their's is a comfortable life - two kids, a nice house, solid careers. But when two of their best friends announce they are getting divorced because their marriage is in a rut, Phil and Claire take action to prevent their marriage from ending up the same. What is supposed to be an exciting dinner at a new restaurant turns into a case of mistaken identities, grand larsony, and highly entertaining comedy.

Written by Josh Klausner (writer of Shrek The Third and Shrek Forever After) and directed by Shawn Levy of Night At The Museum fame, Date Night offers a little something for every type of comedic taste. Those that appreciate Steve Carell's face contortions and signature verbal... blatherings will love watching his character attempt to deal with situations far beyond his comfort zone. And the classic dead pan that Tina Fey brings to her delivery brings a nice balance to the two actors. Mark Wahlberg appears several times throughout the film, and does what he does best - looking hot with his shirt off. Don't get me wrong, there are times when he can actually act, but his main purpose for this film was, in fact, to be shirtless. No arguments here.

Although the movie is rated PG-13 I didn't find anything in it to be offensive or lude, so letting your teenager watch it shouldn't be a problem. The film is only 88 minutes long, which took me back to the days of the 80s when movies were short and the comedy was quick. The action begins relatively quickly in this film, which is a nice change. The opening scenes merely set the stage for who the Fosters are, and who they don't want to become, which leads quickly and easily into their completely screwed up evening. My recommendation: IF YOU LIKE STEVE CARELL AND TINA FEY YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS THIS FILM! If you don't, at least catch it on DVD. It's short enough - you won't mind.

Brace yourselves for the next great local band to come roaring through, and one of Missouri’s own shall lead them…

The Christian rock band Human Anyway is celebrating the release of their first album, “Yet To Be Determined.” Their music is driving, and the message they offer through their songs is one of hope, forgiveness, and the right to be, well, human.

The Springfield, MO band is led by Zac Rantz, whose lead vocals are crisp and fun. Brothers Jeremy and Chris Anglen play lead guitar and bass respectively, and Jeremy’s powerful backing vocals are heard in many of the band’s rock numbers. John Van Gordon’s rhythm guitar and Matt Petry’s drumming round out the band’s full sound, and although these guys have only played together a few years, they work tightly together and compliment each other well. I enjoyed listening to the “Yet To Be Determined” demo, not just because I know a few of these guys, but also because their songs are progressive. This is not an album where every song sounds the same and covers the same topic. Each track is unique, having it’s own sound and message. From “Humble Me,” which jumps out and lets you know this isn’t your parent’s Christian music that you’re hearing, to the slower ballad “Dear Child” and the catchy groove of “Beautiful Disaster” (as a side note – are there any Christian rock bands in the last ten years who haven’t had a song called “Beautiful Disaster”?), the album keeps you entertained, tapping your feet, and, in some cases, banging your head. Like most bands starting out the guys have written all their own songs, which once again proves how diverse they are in style and talent. Probably the best compliment I can give the band on their first recording is this – it doesn’t sound like a homegrown recording. This record actually sounds like an accomplished band.

I’ve also seen the band live, and was really impressed with their stage presence. They have fun together and play off each other well, and their loyal following proves it.
The previews were funny. The early reviews were good. And the movie itself was… different.

Matt Damon stars as Mark Whitacre in the dark comedy The Informant! Damon gained nearly 30 pounds to play this role for no other purpose than to look more like a soft, settled company executive, which he did. As the VP of an agri-business giant, Whitacre is exposed to all kinds of illegal executive activity and has finally decided he’s had enough. He turns over his knowledge to FBI Agent Brian Shepherd, beautifully played by Scott Bakula, and the government decides to make Whitacre an informant in order to take the company down. Damon does a superb job of playing the overly brilliant goof, who causes his own twists and turns in the film. Every scene turns up new evidence and information, and the twists just keep on coming. While the audience is made to like Whitacre, he is definitely not what he seems, and that is part of his charm and a big part of the movies plot. The script, written by Scott Z. Burns, was based on the book by Kurt Eichenwald, and wasn’t supposed to be a comedy. It’s very dry, very dark in some places, and is only salvaged as humorous because of the massive amounts of comics who were cast in the film. Tom Smothers, Bob Zany, Tom Papa, Melanie Lynskey, Joel McHale, and Patton Oswalt are just the tip of the comic iceberg, and each delivers their own brand of sarcasm and wit that makes even the most serious line something that draws a snicker.

The movie gets off to a slow and somewhat confusing start, with Damon narrating about things that have nothing to do with his character or his actions. In the end you realize these are the thoughts going through Whitacre’s brain as they occur, but it takes a while to put that together. Unfortunately by the time the action really got moving and you realized the truth about Whitacre, there was only 10 minutes left in the film. And supposedly this movie is set in the early 90s, but the costumes and most set pieces suggest a late 70s flair, which confused me early on. All in all the movie is worth seeing, but I would definitely wait until it hits the second-run theaters so you can pay less and still be just as confused as the folks who saw it the first time around.

Take a trip back with some of the best music from the 50s through the 90s with one of Branson’s hottest shows – The Rankin Brothers!

This show is comprised of two singing and guitar playing brothers, Matt and Mark Rankin, three female vocalists, and five amazing musicians. Every impressive note heard in the theater is live, and at intermission it is noted that they are one of the few shows in town to still uphold that fact.

Inspired by early duet groups of the 50s and 60s, the Rankins take you on a musical journey through the decades as they sing and dance their way through The Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, Sonny & Cher, and more. Both brothers have very unique voices in that Matt can hit almost every classic high note in “Unchained Melody” and Mark can imitate the vocal stylings of everyone from Neil Diamond to Elvis Presley. The female vocalists, “The Rankinettes,” get their share of the spotlight when they are featured in famous chick-songs like “Its My Party,” “Mr. Postman,” and “One Fine Day.” All in all the music selections were fun, although expected and overplayed by many shows in Branson, and the show maintained a great energy that kept the entire audience clapping their hands and stomping their feet.

The brothers offer their own unique comedy style in the show as well. The ongoing joke about how embarrassed the family is by Mark’s obsession with impersonating Elvis is well played, and the brothers banter towards each other, as well as their competition with each other is always fun to watch.

After the show both Rankin brothers stay in the lobby to greet each person who attended, sign autographs, and take pictures. This is a great way for them to connect with their audience, and to let everyone in on a secret I have known about the brothers for over a year – they truly are the nicest people in Branson! I have met both brothers on numerous occasions and can personally tell you I have never met more genuine and polite entertainers. They truly love what they do, and they are outwardly grateful for their fans and show patrons. Let me tell you, it is refreshing to be around!

If you love rock and roll through any decade, you will love this show. There is something for everyone, so take the kids and take your parents and enjoy a fun night with The Rankin Brothers! Held at The Caravelle Theatre on Highway 76, the show runs every Tuesday – Saturday at 8 p.m. Be sure and check out the brothers on their website.
The Directorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09243428321593635096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552022897180337293.post-37709167855910873902010-05-05T15:09:00.006-05:002010-06-07T13:53:41.132-05:00"The Proposal" has something for everyone!

One of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time, The Proposal has something for everyone!

While the premise may lead you to believe this is a chick flick – think again. This movie touches every style of humor, and does it in ways that are actually, well, funny. From Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, who play Margaret, the corporate witch that every employee loves to hate, and Andrew, the corporate doormat that everyone can relate with, all the way down to Betty White as the 90-year-old grandmother who calls it like she sees it in every way, the casting was perfect. Director Anne Fletcher leads you through an engaging story so that every look, every word, and every scene means something to the audience, and she keeps you laughing from beginning to closing credits. The cast has great chemistry; and the scenery in the film is amazing. This film has inspired me to take a trip to Alaska, where it is set, just from seeing the beautiful landscape.

The story is based around Margaret’s ploy to stay in the country after finding out she will be deported back to Canada due to some issues with her working visa. In a moment of pressure she comes up with the plan to marry Andrew, her assistant who will do anything to keep his job and move up in the company. They are questioned by every person in their lives as to the validity of this sudden news; his parents, the Immigration office, and their co-workers all have trouble believing it could ever happen. But in their quest to commit fraud, they find out the truth about each other, and a lot about themselves. It really is a feel-good story, but a lot of that is based on the fact that you never go more than about three full minutes without a solid belly laugh. Seriously, few movies have made me laugh as much and as often as this film did.

Another notable performance was given by Oscar Nunez as Ramone, shop-keeper by day, out-of-shape exotic dancer by night. His dance moves are on display for all to see in one hilarious scene with Margaret looking mortified and the women of the town laughing hysterically.

The Proposal is rated PG-13 for some sexual content, brief nudity, and language, and is probably best suited for late teens and older. Don't hold your breath for amazing DVD extras - there are NONE! Pretty disappointing, as I would love to see Bullock and Reynolds talk about working together. All in all, grab a date, a friend, or your mom, and you are guaranteed to enjoy a great summer comedy.
I was pleasantly surprised to find this movie is actually a substance comedy that has just enough melodrama to keep the audience entertained and interested in the story.

James Brennan (Eisenberg) is a recent college graduate looking for any job that will hire him who ends up working for a local fun park. One downfall is the fact that he was a poetry major, a character trait that doesn’t quite fit into his 1987 Pittsburgh upbringing. Another personality setback is how similar James is to actor Michael Cera in his last three movies. It seems obvious that Mottola wanted Cera for this movie, so making the lead character resemble Cera was his next best option. Eisenberg brings a slightly different flavor to the film, but nothing that makes him stand out. The same goes for Stewart, whose character Emily is remarkably parallel to Bella, the character she played in Twilight. Technically, I guess Bella would be like Emily snce Adventureland came first, but still... While Stewart does have a solid handle on her character’s teen angst (even though she is portraying a 20-year-old), she doesn’t show much growth even with her world being turned upside down around her. One standout performance comes from Matt Bush, whose character Frigo is the perfect reminder of the annoying semi-bully that we all loved and hated in school but couldn’t get away. I smile every time I see him in an AT&T commercial... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuu3jdmXQ4Y)

I am a big fan of the 80s, and I love that this film wasn’t made to be an “80s movie.” It was simply a film set in 1987, and the lingo, costumes and music compliment perfectly.

There is a lot of drug use portrayed in this movie, but nothing graphic. One completely unrealistic element of the film is how much free time these kids have at work. Smoking and drinking are all done on the clock, yet magically no one notices. The storyline is solid, but the characters neither act their age nor react believably to some of the adult situations they find themselves in. This movie would be better if all the characters were high school grads, not college, and if the relationship between the main characters was further established before hearts are broken over what seems like a trivial matter. That being said, my rating for this movie is good – IF YOU ARE UNDER 30 AND WANT A FUN MOVIE WITH A LIGHT PLOT, AT THE VERY LEAST WATCH THIS ON DVD. Adventureland is rated "R". You can purchase Adventureland on DVD or Adventureland [Blu-ray] from Amazon.com.
The Directorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09243428321593635096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552022897180337293.post-71161196970612979552010-04-13T20:46:00.002-05:002010-05-19T10:28:43.087-05:00Music, Magic, and Fun!

Let’s take a look at another entertainment option in the Live Show Capital of the World. Located at 3090 Shepherd of the Hills Expressway in Branson, MO is the Hamner Barber Variety Show, an Ed Sullivan-style variety show full of magic, comedy, music and ventriloquism. The show begins with a comedic look at how magician Dave Hamner and comedian Jim Barber got their starts, then falls into a series of magic tricks performed by Hamner and his wife Denise. I enjoy magic shows because I love to be surprised and amazed, but unfortunately my seat on the far end of a center aisle exposed me to a few behind-the-scenes glimpses of how birds appeared and disappeared, plus gave away one of the neatest entrances by Barber in his classic “Austin Powers” costume. Barber’s ventriloquism is hilarious, even if his character voices sound remarkably similar. Two of the best segments are a Les Miserables duet with Barber and one of his characters where Barber engages in a tug-of-war match with an audience member over a baby, and his version of “Ventriloquist Karaoke” where Barber provides the voices for two unsuspecting male audience members as they sing a hit by The Supremes. Absolutely hilarious.

The illusions in this show are powerful, and the music and choreography leading up to each trick really heightens the excitement. Unfortunately, in their effort to keep the show fast-paced by alternating an illusion with a comedy bit, the Hamner Barber show actually make it more difficult to keep momentum, so the beginning of each new segment feels sluggish and a lot of the dramatic effects were lost. However, one magic trick that should not be missed is their multimedia tribute to veterans, an illusion over three years in the making.

The Hamner Barber Variety Show is a great show for families no matter the age of your children. My rating for this show – GRAB A FEW KIDS, PACK UP THE CAR, AND MAKE A NIGHT OF IT WITH THIS FUN SHOW!

If you like music and lots of dancing with tons of variety,“Spirit of the Dance”, showing at the Branson Variety Theater in Branson, MO, may be the one for you. But I wouldn't hold your breath...
I went into this show with anticipation of crisp Irish step-dancing, beautiful costumes, and lots of energy. I was highly disappointed. The show began with step-dancing that may or may not have been considered Irish, and within thirty seconds disappointment had set in. There were no taps on the dancers’ shoes, and all the sounds their shoes should have been making were pre-recorded and played over the sound system! Even the singing was canned, although the actors nearly pulled the wool over my eyes a few times with their perfectly executed breathing and lip-syncing. I was excited to see that several different types and styles of dance were included in the show, which was also beneficial for the cast as very few of them looked like actual trained Irish step-dancers. While it is accepted that the more dancers you have the less synchronized the group looks, there were several big mistakes made by a few individuals of the large dance troupe. Don’t get me wrong, these guys were having fun, and it was evident. Wide eyes and big smiles were on everyone’s faces, and the camaraderie between the cast members grouped with their ability to involve the audience made the above mentioned transgressions forgivable. Some of them, at least. I especially enjoyed watching Mark Hobson-Middleton, who, despite his height, is incredibly coordinated and exceptionally versatile. It is obvious most members of the cast enjoy being on stage with him, and his welcoming expressions and ear-to-ear grin make him a pleasure to watch.
The costumes on the ladies were tasteful and elegant, while the striped shirt with glitter outlines that the men wore looked very homemade. The overall set was very basic but effective, but technically this show was beautiful. My compliments to the show’s technical director, Kevin Vandeutekom, for a fantastic use of color, shading, fog, and effects. The lighting set the mood for every song, and really enhanced the overall experience of each set of dances.
Overall this show was a crowd pleaser and is worth seeing – if you are already in Branson and don’t have other plans. My rating – UNLESS YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BETTER TO DO, SKIP THIS SHOW!
